Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, ratified by the European Union (EU) to establish processes for recycling electrical and electronic equipment, requires that all such equipment sold in the EU must be in compliance with the directive, which will be implemented during 2005 and 2006. As a producer of electrical and electronic equipment, Avocent Corporation has taken the following steps to ensure WEEE compliance.
Product Design
Product design and production standards specify that Cyclades®-branded electrical and electronic equipment and components are to be dismantled and recycled in accordance with the directive.
Use of the WEEE Symbol
In accordance with European Standard EN 50419, Cyclades-branded products that are subject to the WEEE directive will be marked with the mandated "crossed-out wheeled bin" symbol (as shown above) for items shipped from Avocent Corporation on or after August 13, 2005.
Information for Users
The following user information will be provided to the commercial customers of all Cyclades branded products subject to the WEEE directive.
The WEEE symbol on products or its packaging indicates that this product must not be disposed of with other waste. It is the customer's responsibility to dispose of the product properly by taking it to a designated site for recycling. To locate a recycling/disposal site near you, contact your local city recycling program, your regular waste disposal service or the agent from whom you purchased Cyclades-branded products.
Reporting
Avocent ensures that any information pertaining to the producers' obligations in respect to Cyclades-branded products will be provided as of the date specified in the WEEE directive.
Commercial Users
Commercial customers who purchase Cyclades-branded replacement products are entitled to free recycling of Cyclades-branded equipment purchased after August 13, 2005, when the equipment is returned to a designated collection site (otherwise disposal fees may be incurred by the commercial customer).
Treatment
Avocent confirms that the treatment and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment performed on behalf of Avocent, either collectively or individually, will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the WEEE directive, including special treatment for specified parts.
Information for Recycling Centers
Avocent will provide recycling centers with reuse and treatment information by request for each type of new product introduced by the date specified in the WEEE directive, typically within one year after a new product has been released.
